Rather than standing pat, Los Angeles continued to add talent during the offseason. An Offense Searching for Consistency

On paper, the Dodgers’ offense has been one of the league’s best. They rank among MLB leaders in run differential, comeback victories, and on-base percentage. However, watching the team on a nightly basis tells a more complicated story.

Ohtani got off to a slow start offensively and was even given occasional rest days when pitching. Since then, he has completely turned things around, raising his batting average back to .300 and once again becoming one of the most dangerous hitters in baseball.

Andy Pages has experienced the opposite trajectory. After a scorching start, he cooled off and endured a brief slump before finding his rhythm again. Now back to producing consistently, Pages ranks third in Major League Baseball in RBIs and appears to be a strong candidate for his first All-Star selection.

Freeman’s season has been somewhat unusual. While his .273 batting average may not jump off the page, he has consistently made hard contact and appears to have suffered from some bad luck. Even so, he continues to be a productive contributor, and several of his underlying numbers suggest better results could be on the horizon.

Betts, meanwhile, has struggled. After missing time with an injury, he has yet to fully regain his form and is currently batting .218. The Dodgers hope their veteran shortstop can rediscover the consistency that has made him one of the game’s elite players.

One bright spot has been Max Muncy. The veteran third baseman has enjoyed an outstanding season and is positioning himself for another All-Star appearance, potentially earning a starting role.

The biggest disappointment, however, has been Tucker. The Dodgers committed $240 million to the star outfielder, but he has yet to produce at the level many expected. Through the first half, Tucker is batting .234 with six home runs, numbers that have left fans hoping for significantly more production.

Yamamoto and Ohtani Lead the Rotation

The starting rotation has experienced its share of highs and lows, but several pitchers have stepped up.

Yamamoto has continued to establish himself as the anchor of the staff. Through 14 starts, he is 7-5 with a 2.65 ERA and has consistently given the Dodgers a chance to win every time he takes the mound. Recently, he carried a no-hitter into the ninth inning against the White Sox. A defensive error by Betts in the eighth ended his perfect game bid before Yamamoto surrendered a one-out home run in the ninth.

Ohtani has been even more dominant on the mound than at the plate. He owns a 7-2 record and a remarkable 1.47 ERA. Before his last two starts, that number sat at an incredible 0.67. If he maintains anything close to this level of performance, Ohtani will remain firmly in the Cy Young Award conversation while continuing to add to his already historic career.

Glasnow looked excellent early in the season before suffering a back injury that has sidelined him for an extended period. Snell has also been limited, making only a handful of appearances before returning to the injured list.

The remainder of the rotation has been filled by Justin Wrobleski, Emmet Sheehan, and Roki Sasaki. Wrobleski has emerged as one of the season’s biggest surprises, posting an 8-2 record with a 2.72 ERA. Sheehan and Sasaki have endured some growing pains, though Sasaki appears to have turned a corner recently, an encouraging sign for the talented young right-hander.

Bullpen Questions Emerge

If there is one area drawing increased scrutiny, it is the bullpen.

After an outstanding start to the season, the relief corps has shown signs of regression in June. Díaz was nearly unhittable during the first two months, but an injury forced him out of action and led to a closer-by-committee approach that has produced mixed results.

A unit that once looked dominant has become more vulnerable in high-leverage situations, raising questions about workload management and long-term sustainability as the season progresses.

The Dodgers still possess plenty of bullpen talent, but finding consistency in late-game situations could become one of the organization’s top priorities as the trade deadline approaches.

The Push for a Three-Peat

At this stage, the Dodgers look exactly like what many expected them to be: a legitimate World Series favorite.

Signing

First, let’s start with the familiar faces. The Dodgers re-signed reliever Evan Phillips, who only had seven appearances in 2025 due to an injury that ultimately required Tommy John surgery. He signed a one-year deal for $6.5 million. Infielder and Game 7 hero Miguel Rojas, who is set to retire after this year, re-signed for one more year at $5.5 million. Lastly, fan favorite and the new “Mr. October,” Kiké Hernández re-signed for $4.5 million.

Now for the two big splashes. First, the Dodgers signed closer Edwin Díaz, who last year for the New York Mets earned 28 saves and pitched to a 1.63 ERA. Díaz earned Reliever of the Year honors, marking his third time achieving that award. He has a high strikeout rate, using his high velocity and devastating slider; his strikeout rate is consistently above 40%. The Dodgers had 26 blown saves last year, leading the league, and Tanner Scott — who signed a four-year contract with the Dodgers last year — was very underwhelming, blowing 10 of those saves. This move hopefully gives the Dodgers the security at the end of games that they desperately needed.

Now the even bigger splash: the Dodgers signed outfielder Kyle Tucker to a four-year, $240 million deal with opt-outs after years two and three. The Dodgers’ outfield was a little imbalanced. Teoscar Hernández, the starting right fielder, brought a great bat to the lineup — especially in the playoffs — but his defense was very lackluster. Meanwhile, center fielder Andy Pages was great defensively and had a good bat during the regular season but set career lows offensively in the playoffs. Left field was always a revolving door, but now Kyle Tucker solves all of that. He is pretty much a complete five-tool player with speed, fielding ability, power, contact, and arm strength. Tucker has been an All-Star for four straight seasons and won a Gold Glove in 2022. Although his defense has declined slightly since then, it is still a solid part of his game. Tucker has hit 20–30 home runs every year since 2021 and has also been in that range for stolen bases, except for 2024 when he only had 11. He is no stranger to the postseason either, winning with the Houston Astros in 2022 and hitting .233 with nine home runs across 72 games. Those numbers don’t jump off the

page, but playoff numbers tend to be lower. Kyle Tucker will be the starting right fielder, with Pages staying in center and Hernández moving over to left.

Outlook

Aside from the two major additions, the Dodgers are largely running it back in 2026. The biggest change is the retirement of franchise legend Clayton Kershaw. A few other players departed, but none who dramatically alter the core of this roster. This team’s success will once again hinge less on talent and more on health.

Injuries are the biggest concern entering the season. Kiké Hernández is recovering from left elbow surgery and isn’t expected back until late May or June. Tommy Edman is rehabbing ankle surgery and should return sometime in the first half. Blake Snell is dealing with shoulder discomfort and hasn’t thrown yet, making Opening Day unlikely. Relievers Evan Phillips and Brusdar Graterol are also working their way back from surgeries and are expected to return later in the year.

And that’s just the current list. Over a 162-game season, injuries are inevitable. Kyle Tucker and Tyler Glasnow both have histories of missing time, which adds another layer of risk to two key pieces of the roster.

The good news? The Dodgers “big three” appear healthy. Shohei Ohtani is fully recovered and should enter 2026 without pitching restrictions, setting up the possibility of a true two-way season. Freddie Freeman, now entering his age-36 season, remains elite despite battling ankle issues last year. As he put it, “There wasn’t a 3 at the start of my batting average last year, and that irritates me.” If that ankle holds up, a bounce-back year could be coming.

Mookie Betts also looks poised for a stronger start. After losing 20 pounds due to illness before last season, his performance understandably dipped early. Yet over his final 50 games, he hit .317 while providing elite defense at shortstop, leading the position with 17 defensive runs saved. A full, healthy season could mean an MVP-caliber return.

The rotation remains strong, led by World Series MVP Yoshinobu Yamamoto, with depth pieces like Gavin Stone and River Ryan ready to step in if needed. On paper, this is once again a 100-win-caliber team and the clear favorite in the NL West.

Ohtani, in his playoff home debut, delivered a three-homer, shut-down pitching performance and was named NLCS MVP. The Dodgers punched their ticket to the World Series.

World Series Preview: Dodgers vs. Blue Jays

The Blue Jays defeated the Mariners in a thrilling Game 7 after a George Springer go-ahead three-run homer in the seventh. Game 1 will be Friday in Toronto.

The Jays’ offense has been electric. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is hitting .442 with six postseason homers. Ernie Clement (.429) and Nathan Lukes (.333) have stepped up as well. While Springer’s numbers don’t jump off the page, he’s proven he’s still clutch — just ask Seattle.

Bo Bichette is also returning, giving Toronto another dangerous bat.

The Dodgers, by contrast, have been powered by elite pitching. Their starters posted a 0.63 ERA in the NLCS — the lowest in Championship Series history. Overall, Dodgers pitchers have held opponents to a 1.40 ERA and a .132 batting average in the playoffs.

Their offense, however, hasn’t fully clicked. Kiké Hernández is their top hitter (.306), and Ohtani just broke out of his slump in a massive way.

This World Series is a clash of strengths: Toronto’s red-hot lineup vs. L.A.’s dominant rotation. If the Dodgers can continue to stifle hitters, it won’t be easy — but they could make history as MLB’s first repeat champs in 25 years.

Game 1 saw Shohei Ohtani make his postseason pitching debut in one of the most hostile playoff environments in baseball — Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies handed the ball to emerging ace Cristopher Sánchez after Zack Wheeler was ruled out for the season.

The Phillies struck early, putting up three runs in the second inning. A defensive miscue by Teoscar Hernández in right field allowed two runs to score on a J.T. Realmuto triple, and Harrison Bader followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 3–0.

Roberts then made a key decision — bringing in Sasaki in the eighth. The rookie was flawless, throwing three perfect innings under immense pressure. Vesia took over in the 11th and stranded a runner on second.

In the bottom of the 11th, Edman singled and was pinch-run for by Hyeseong Kim. After a single by Muncy and a walk to Kiké, the Dodgers had the bases loaded. Andy Pages hit a soft comebacker that bounced off the pitcher’s leg. In the confusion, a rushed throw home went wide, and Kim crossed the plate to win it, 2–1.

Sasaki’s Breakout Postseason

The unsung hero of the series was undoubtedly Rōki Sasaki. Initially expected to be a starter, he struggled, got injured, and was even sent to the minors. While Judge’s season is one for the ages, if Raleigh breaks his HR record while leading behind the plate, the MVP might swing his way.

NL Cy Young: Paul Skenes

This one should be unanimous.

Paul Skenes, in just his second season (and first full one), has been electric. Over 32 starts, he posted a 1.97 ERA, becoming the first NL pitcher to go sub-2.00 since Justin Verlander in 2022. He also led the league with 216 strikeouts.

His 10-10 win-loss record shouldn’t matter—the days of relying on that stat are over. Skenes has been the definition of dominance.

From his third start through September, Skubal put together an absurd 26-game stretch with a 1.86 ERA, 212 strikeouts, and fewer than 25 walks. He’s been a major reason for the Tigers’ dominance, and should be locking up his second straight Cy Young.

NL Rookie of the Year: Drake Baldwin vs. Cade Horton

This race has been wide open all year, with names like Roki Sasaki, Jacob Misiorowski, Dylan Crews, and Isaac Collins all getting early buzz. But it has come down to Drake Baldwin and Cade Horton.

Baldwin made the Braves’ Opening Day roster and has put together a steady season, slashing .274/.341/.464 with 19 home runs. Meanwhile, Horton debuted on May 10 and, aside from one rough outing against the Astros, has been brilliant.

Since the All-Star break, Horton has a jaw-dropping 1.03 ERA, the best in MLB over that span. A three-month tear like that is hard to ignore, but Baldwin has been contributing all season.

This one’s a toss-up—but both are deserving.

AL Rookie of the Year: Nick Kurtz

This might be the most clear-cut award of the season.

Nick Kurtz got off to a slow start after debuting on April 23, but quickly turned things around. Since May 1, many argue he’s been one of the best hitters in all of baseball—rookie or not.

On July 25, Kurtz went 6-for-6 with four home runs and eight RBIs, tying the all-time single-game total bases record with 19. That performance has already been called one of the greatest individual games in MLB history.

In July alone, Kurtz hit .395—yes, a 22-year-old rookie nearly hit .400 over a full month. The kid is the real deal, and the AL Rookie of the Year is rightfully his.
