We’ve already seen one shocking move earlier this season when the Boston Red Sox traded away Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. Now, with just one week remaining until the 2025 MLB trade deadline, it’s time to look at the biggest names likely to be dealt—and which teams are shaping up as buyers or sellers.
Eugenio Suárez
Suárez has been involved in numerous trade rumors, particularly with the New York Yankees. He’s currently batting .252 with 86 RBIs, but more impressively, he has 36 home runs—fourth in the league and just one behind Shohei Ohtani for the National League lead.
If traded, Suárez would be making history—no player has ever been dealt mid-season after hitting 35+ homers. The Yankees have a glaring hole at third base, making Suárez a natural fit, but they aren’t alone in their pursuit. The Mariners, Cubs, and Tigers have also shown interest.
While the Diamondbacks could be looking to move other players on expiring contracts—such as Zac Gallen or Merrill Kelly—Suárez remains their biggest trade chip.
Sandy Alcantara
The 2022 NL Cy Young winner has been the subject of trade rumors since spring training, but 2025 has not been kind to him. In 19 starts this season, Alcantara owns a 6.66 ERA, and opposing hitters are batting .315 against him.
According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, teams are wary not only because of his performance but also due to his contract—Alcantara is owed $17.3 million this year and $21 million in 2026.
Still, some contenders might gamble on his upside. His most recent start against the Padres was a step in the right direction: seven innings, four hits, four strikeouts, and only an unearned run. There’s still reason to believe he could bounce back. The Cubs have been a main team needing another starter but other teams that could go after him are the Astros, Dodgers, and Red Sox.
Los Angeles Dodgers
After an aggressive offseason, the Dodgers seemed like they wouldn’t need to add much—yet here they are, once again poised to be buyers at the deadline.
They’ve been linked to a potential blockbuster trade with the Guardians for left fielder Steven Kwan and elite closer Emmanuel Clase. This would be an ideal outcome for LA,
especially with Michael Conforto struggling and Tanner Scott sidelined with an elbow injury. Clase would provide much-needed stability at the back end of the bullpen.
The Dodgers have also reportedly inquired about other relievers, including Jhoan Durán, Griffin Jax, and Ryan Helsley. With Blake Snell expected to return soon, adding bullpen depth could be the final touch to restore the rotation and pitching staff to full strength heading into October.
