The boxing world is in heavy anticipation of the May 5th rematch between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin aka “GGG”. When you look at the previous fight which was determined to be a controversial draw, look no further than judge Adelaide Byrd who’s scorecard read 118-110 in favor of Canelo. The other judges including Don Trella had it a draw at 114-114 and Dave Moretti gave “GGG” the edge at 115-113.

Based on what I saw from the previous fight, it seemed like Golovkin had the edge, particularly him being the more active fighter inside with his jabs and combinations landing on Alvarez. The results of the match drew heavy criticism on social media and across the boxing world. However with that being said, we all know that the boxing world is no stranger to controversial matches and decisions.

According to CompuBox numbers, “GGG” landed 218 punches to Alvarez who landed 169. Golovkin also landed 108 jabs to 55 for Canelo. It seems like there is already another component of controversy brewing as Alvarez has tested positive for clenbuterol. Clenbuterol is a banned substance which Canelo claims the positive test came from eating contaminated meat in Mexico.

We’re not at liberty to say Canelo’s claim is true, but it has been known over the years that many athletes training or living in Mexico have tested positive for this substance which is related to meat contamination. Once this information was disclosed, Golden Boy immediately informed “GGG’s” promoter Tom Loeffler and the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Canelo has tested clean over his twelve previous fights in the past.

Clearly the Canelo camp is embarrassed by this situation and moving forward their willing to test for any and all tests associated with the upcoming match on May 5th. Both fighters seem to be eager for the rematch, as each one of them felt like they defeated the other. Canelo has already been quoted as saying that “this time around they’ll be no excuses regarding the judges because he’s going to knock Golovkin out”.

Golovkin posts a career record of 37-0-1 while Canelo sits at 49-1-2.Golovkin clearly was the more aggressive and physical fighter last time around, but we shall see what the future holds in the rematch. While the first fight posted roughly 1.3 million pay per view buys, this rematch is anticipated to bring in even higher numbers than before. I truly believe the rematch will be an instant classic, let’s just hope this time around the final outcome is a lot less controversial than before.
