THE COLLAPSE OF THE EAGLES AND THE FUTURE OF NICK SIRIANNI

We all know that the best thing happening in Philadelphia besides the cheesesteaks are the Eagles. The city of brotherly love currently isn’t embracing the state of their Eagles with open arms, even with Journey’s 1982 classic playing on repeat.

After a trip to the Super Bowl last year and a 10-1 start to the 2023 season, the Eagles wings seem to have been clipped as they spiraled on a downward descent and lost six out of their last seven games. The epic collapse of the Eagles was even more evident as they bounced out of the playoffs in the Wildcard round, losing to the Buccaneers 32-9.

What was a highly anticipated season of lofty expectations in Philly, it soon became a nightmare with many surprises. The running game disappeared and was particularly abandoned during the Wildcard game in Tampa. The defense of the Eagles seemed to forget how to tackle, as they missed a total of ten tackles in the loss to the Bucs. We all know that A.J. Brown was out of the lineup due to injury and Jalen Hurts wasn’t at one hundred percent either, but that doesn’t mean the Eagles get a pass on their pathetic play.

They went into the postseason looking unenergized and lackadaisical, with back-to-back losses to the Cardinals and Giants to end the regular season. The magic and enthusiasm that the team once had from last year going into this season seemed to disappear faster than a Houdini trick. Jalen Hurts played during the year with injuries, and his numbers reflected slippage. Hurst threw for 23 TD’s, but he also had 15 interceptions and a QBR rating of 60.0.

Whatever the message in the locker room was coming from Nick Sirianni, it obviously didn’t resonate or work with the players. There was glaring evidence of a lack of focus and energy in Philly that was the heartbeat of the team in years past. Despite Sirianni leading the Eagles to the playoffs in his first three seasons, he is under the microscope, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s fired. Owner Jeff Lurie and General Manager Howie Roseman will be meeting with Sirianni this week and evaluating the situation.

When you have legendary coaching names on the market like Bill Belichick and Jim Harbaugh, I do think that the timing of potentially letting Sirianni go wouldn’t be such a bad move. We shall see what happens in Philadelphia in the next few days/weeks, but regardless of the outcome, this Eagles nest clearly has been compromised.
